Second City Crossing scoops national transport award

Manchester Metrolink’s Second City Crossing (2CC); a new line running through the heart of the city centre, won the Construction and Engineering Project of the Year at the National Transport Awards.

Expansion programme

This M-Pact Thales (MPT) and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) project is the latest €185m extension of the Manchester Metrolink and marked the completion of the network’s phenomenal €1.7bn expansion programme, which has seen it grow to three times its original size. The line, as with the rest of the expansion programme, was constructed by MPT, a consortium of VolkerRail, Laing O’Rourke and Thales, and delivered in partnership with WSP.

2CC offers new links and more frequent trams through Manchester city centre, as well as improved service reliability and greater operational flexibility for a network now responsible for more than 40m passenger journeys a year.
