Over 38,000 street lights to be upgraded by VolkerHighways in new €37m contract

VolkerHighways will begin the replacement of over 38,000 streetlights in Reading, Slough and Wokingham. The work is part of a €37m LED upgrade and maintenance project. 

38,651 LED lanterns

The project in the three boroughs will involve the supply and installation of 38,651 energy efficient LED lanterns which includes the replacement of 11,323 lighting columns which will require mains connections. The newly upgraded lighting will be connected to three individual central management systems (CMS) which allow each borough council to monitor, dim or turn off the street lights as they require. As part of the contract, VolkerHighways will provide council staff with comprehensive training on their new CMS.

Contract

The contract begins on 1 April 2016 and will be completed over a two year period with the maintenance contract in Slough operating in the same time period with the option of a one year extension.
