Substation Tweede Maasvlakte

At the Tweede Maasvlakte near Rotterdam, we are working hard on the engineering and realization of a new 380kV GIS substation and Shunt reactor. Both vital for the new high-voltage infrastructure for Shell's future Holland Hydrogen 1 hydrogen plant.

Already since early 2021, in collaboration with our partner Volker Energy Solutions, we have been closely involved in the development of the project by creating the complete basic, final and implementation design.

The substation will be connected to CrossWind, Shell and Eneco's offshore wind farm. With wind energy, an electrolyser at the plant will produce green hydrogen. Shell intends to use this hydrogen, among other things, to make the Shell Energy & Chemicals Park in Rotterdam (formerly Shell Pernis) more sustainable and, eventually, for heavy transport by road and water.

Due to the high power demand of Holland Hydrogen 1, it will be connected directly to the 380kV of TenneT station Maasvlakte. Among other things, Volker Energy Solutions will realize the connection of approximately 6.5km for this purpose. At the time of commissioning of the hydrogen plant in the second half of this decade, this will be the largest electrolyser in Europe with a capacity of 200MW.

Working at the heart of the Dutch energy transition.

This project goes beyond construction. It means an active role at the heart of the Dutch energy transition. Holland Hydrogen 1 is being built on the Second Maasvlakte in Rotterdam and will be Europe's largest hydrogen plant. In the plant, water will be split into oxygen and hydrogen using wind energy. With this, industrial processes and heavy mobility can be made CO2 neutral. It also opens a new chapter for Rotterdam and for Shell.

The new 380kV GIS substation and Shunt reactor form the backbone of this innovative project and give the plant the necessary clout. Visser & Smit Bouw contributes not only knowledge and technology, but also the determination to make an active contribution to the transition to sustainable energy. It is our mission, together with our partners, to make this project a great success.
