Boskalis and Van Hattum and Blankevoort take on major dyke reinforcement project Krachtige IJsseldijken Krimpenerwaard (KIJK)
Regional water authority Hoogheemraadschap van Schieland en de Krimpenerwaard (HHSK) has announced that it will award the plan development phase for project KIJK to the combination Boskalis and Van Hattum en Blankevoort (a VolkerWessels company). The project aims to protect more than 200,000 inhabitants and the economic values of the hinterland of the Hollandse IJssel from flooding. We are doing this by reinforcing and raising 10 kilometres of IJsseldijk on the south side of the Hollandsche IJssel between Krimpen aan den IJssel and Gouderak.
Planning
The exploration phase has been completed and the KIJK project team is now starting the plan development phase. This is followed by the realisation phase and finally a follow-up phase. During the plan development phase, the project team of KIJK, in close cooperation with HHSK, will further elaborate the design and draw up the Water Act project plan and the accompanying permits. For this planning study, the combination has been strengthened with specialist knowledge of the Royal HaskoningDHV and Witteveen en Bos agencies.
Intention to continue cooperation during realisation
After careful consideration of views and/or appeals from interested parties, implementation starts. It is the intention of HHSK to continue the cooperation after the successful completion of the plan development phase and to assign the sub assignment for realisation to the same combination. In the realisation phase, the dyke will be reinforced and raised. At high tide there is more pressure on the dyke. To prevent parts of the dyke from breaking off, the dyke must be reinforced. In addition, waves hit the dyke at high tide, which can lead to damage. To prevent this, the dyke must be raised. Construction work is scheduled to start in 2023. It is planned that the dyke will once again meet safety standards in 2026.

In addition to the agencies Royal HaskoningDHV and Witteveen and Bos, VolkerWessels companies Volker Staal en Funderingen (VSF) and VolkerWessels Infra Competence Centre (VWICC) are also involved. In this phase, VSF brings in expertise in the field of specialist implementation methods and VWICC provides project management and project control.
Why this project?
Dykes protect the Netherlands against flooding. For example, the dyke along the Hollandsche IJssel protects the Krimpenerwaard. In order to be able to protect the area in the future as well, the dyke must be reinforced and raised. Climate change is causing the water level of the sea to rise and rivers are more likely to experience high water levels. As a result, the Hollandsche IJssel also experiences high water levels more often. At the same time, soil subsidence is a problem in many places in the Netherlands, including the Krimpenerwaard. In order to be able to ensure water safety even under these conditions, the dyke section between Gouderak and Krimpen aan den IJssel must be reinforced and raised. This is being done in the project KIJK: Krachtige IJsseldijken Krimpenerwaard.
